Kayaking Loch Ken

Introduction

Loch Ken is 14.48km (9 miles) long and even at its widest point it’s no more than 600 metres across.

It lies in the Glenkens which is the valley region containing the small parishes dotted around the area. The name seems to have originated from the surrounding Southern Uplands and the River Ken.

Glen is a Scottish term for a deep valley in the Highlands, generally long and bounded by gently sloped concave sides.

Getting there

From my home in the North West it took me four and a half hours to reach the loch.

Loch Ken is a fairly gentle long loch on the edge of Galloway Forest. Fairly well inhabited, there is a parking spot near the village of Parton just past the holiday park. Park up here and access is almost immediate.
